Unity Church of Tucson

Within the last couple of years more and more things that affect my spirituality have surfaced and have found a resonance within an ever deepening understanding of the Unity teachings. My relationship with Unity and New Thought really has its roots as far back as I can remember as I was born into a family where this was believed, and really never thought of as a religion as such, but more a reminder of the spiritual journey that encompasses all life. Actually Unity straddles the fence, so to speak, as in order to qualify for the GI Bill following World War II Unity applied and received recognition as a “Religious Seminary” by the government, so from this point of view Unity is a religious denomination, but from the majority of those within it today, Unity like the Windows© operating system for a PC, provides an environment within which functions of life can be better understood.

Unity and New Thought then is an operating system within which one finds clarity and cohesion as the various aspects of one’s life are engaged and encountered. As one looks at the desktop of a computer with the various icons representing programs that are stored within a hard drive, Unity’s basic teaching of the One Presence, One Power can serve as a desktop of our lives, and the various icons of physicality, relationships, prosperity, as well as anything and everything that has our attention, can be better understood within an integrativeness, each within the common denominator of God or Source Energy expressing through us, as us. We are the desktop, Unity or Truth Principles becomes the path that connects us with the icons of life and spirituality is the natural outcome.

Then there is another point of necessary understanding as everything is apparently immersed within a basic Principle of the universe as a whole—the Law of Attraction, or consciousness which attracts and bonds unto itself similar frequencied experiences. To understand this is our very own personal Get Out Of Jail Card for it provides for us not only the understanding of why our lives are as they are, but then the understanding of what we can do to make things more to our liking. What Unity and New Thought offers then, is so totally unique within “religion” as it is generally understood, that it cannot be captured within that word, for religion cannot embrace or even begin to understand the freedom and power found within the knowledge of Oneness that has within it the Law of Consciousness also called the Law of Attraction.

I think it is an easy step for New Thought people to begin to understand that all things are vibrationally based. The various scientific disciplines of physics, chemistry, astrology and more speak to this. Light and sound are so measured, hence all outside stimuli that our bodies receive are translated into a vibrational energy that is interpreted by our brains. Everything is so based.
This being so, isn’t it logical to understand that this is also how the very fundamental basis of the universe—consciousness or the Law of Attraction—is also predicated? Oneness then, is an understanding that takes us the next step, for Oneness is not exclusionary even when our possible religious upbringing attempts to allow it to be so. Saying this we are not as much children of God, or even Sons and Daughters of God, even though these words make us feel warm and cuddly, we are the very activity of God Itself—Source Energy that individualized Itself within the omnipresent envelope of Beingness as extensions of Energy that then further extended itself into physical form…the physical form we presently now know to be us, each and all.

We are it and knowing this is that Get Out Of Jail Card that is the key to moving out of the “jails” of confusion, lack, inharmony, sickness and all the rest, but we have to step up to the plate of self-responsibility and begin to do what is required.

What is required? First to acknowledge that the brand of “reality” that we now are experiencing is present as our reality because we gave birth to it…we are the creators of our own reality. Yes, we have often done it by default as we allowed what others wanted us to be, do and have into our vibrational signature, but the bottom line is we accepted it and made it our own. No one can to it to us, but we can buy into another’s desires for us and make it our own. But, haven’t we been almost trained to blame another, or the family or nation or race or gender we were either lucky enough or unlucky enough to be born into? Remember, no luck, no accident, no chance…we drew all of this into our experience because of the vibrational signature we made our own, hence we have to, as it were, change our signature.

How can we do that? First by recognizing how this vibrational signature we are continually offering to the Universe for fulfillment got there in the first place. We looked outward (understandably, but no longer as we now know better) and made judgments upon what “is” and eventually called it a truth. And, often we accepted as gospel appropriately used when we talk about religion as compared to spirituality—what others held as a truth and then blindly bought into it and made it our own. What does Law of Attraction or consciousness then do? What it always accurately does, it reaches out and finds what is like unto it and then brings it into a focus that we call our life.

What is the only possible Truth? Ultimately God, or Source Energy, of course. But if we extrapolate this a wee bit, cannot we then say that Life, Abundance, Peace, Love and Joy is (singular verb used appropriately) the only Truth as well? So, all the things that we say “is,” be they lack, death, pain and suffering, confusion and more cannot be Truth unless we make them our truth. Said another way, to
change what “is,” means we have to change what is true for us by ceasing to give energy to what we no longer want more of.

So, the first step is withdrawing energy from what we no longer want to be, do or have. Granted, it may be what “is” at this present moment as well as seeming to be almost set in concrete as what “is” can indeed be a large and unpleasant specter. But it got there because it in some fashion was based upon something we called a truth and then stirred around in it for sometimes a long, long time. Maybe even this stirring served us by eliciting sympathy or even pity from others, but sympathy or pity doesn’t pay the rent or bring us joy. So, now withdrawing energy means certainly less and less of it appearing in our conversations with others, but along with this the void has to be filled. With what? With what we now want, coupled with the understanding that because only God is True, all the other manifestations of anything including the most fearful things are only a temporary minor inconvenience…an indicator of something in our vibrational signature that obviously is not serving us, so we now reach for a new genre of thinking that will begin to serve us well.

“This (whatever) is only temporary and because I know only God or my Source is Real, I am finding a measure of peace in talking and imaging how I am going to feel when I allow more of XXXX to be part of my vibrational signature and eventually into my manifest world.” Indeed, “The cattle on a thousand hills are mine.” “Things always work out for me.” “I am increasingly more and more aware of the guidance my Higher Self is unceasingly offering.” “I am as I extended me into physicality, hence I am well, strong, clear, prosperous and loveable.”

As an extension of Source Energy or God, I have access to the power that set universes into motion, solar systems into being and, should I choose to do so, create bondage in my life. Any light bulbs go off in you?
