Church councils have been about discussing and settling matters of church doctrine and practice. The list of councils should include, but often doesn’t, the first one which is referred to as the Council of Jerusalem (Acts 15 and Galatians 2). This first gathering was attended by the apostles of Jesus and took place some time after the crucifixion and before the destruction of Herod’s Temple. The issues they were trying to settle, according to Acts, had to do with whether new converts, coming from the spread of Jesus’ teachings into areas of the Roman empire and to those not being Jewish born, were required to observe the requirement of biblical circumcision and other matters of diet and rules of Judaism. At that council, James who was the leader of the Jerusalem church, after hearing all the discussion for and against, made a decision which later became known as the Apostolic Decree. To make a long story short, he said that although it is suggested that gentiles follow Jewish law concerning diet and clean living, it was not obligatory. In other words, those not born into Jewish tradition need not be burdened with learning and observing those traditions. Perhaps he felt it more important that they learn and follow
the teachings of Jesus.

In the following years there have been many different
interpretations of the teachings of Jesus. Some of those
teachers and teachings ended up being considered heretics
by the church, a church that evolved from its early beginning
with the apostles of Jesus. These differences of beliefs led
to not only different teachings but then to actual infi ghting
within the church, so much so that eventually the Roman
Emperor Constantine the Great had to get involved. Apparently
he attempted to contain something that had started
out as dissention among church leaders but which had
developed into unrest within the empire.
This led to the Council of Nicaea, which was called in
325 CE by Constantine. He approached this unrest within
the empire the way he would normally approach such things He tried to approach it politically and called a meeting of
all the bishops of the church in the hopes that they together
would agree upon some points of belief that he could
approve and then put into law. The meetings with 318
bishops lasted for two months and twelve days and what
they came up with was something which is now referred
to as the Nicene Creed and they also fi xed the date for
Easter. What they agreed upon may have been the result
of the vote of the majority of the bishops but it defi nitely
did not change the beliefs of everyone involved. Forced
beliefs have never been well received so it’s no surprise
that Constantine’s plan for peace, based on imposing the
decisions of the council by force, did not have that desired
effect either.
The next council, which was called some 56 years
later in 381 CE, was attended by 150 bishops. It mainly
was called to suppress as heretical the teachings of and
followers of Macedonius, a Greek bishop of Constantinople,
who was said to have impugned the divinity
of the Holy Ghost. However, it may have more about
the problems between the two heads of the church,
the one headquartered in Constantinople and the
other in Rome. Indeed, there was a major split beginning
to take place between the eastern church
and the western church.
